Christos A. Kontovas is a naval architect and marine
engineer and holds a diploma from the School of Naval
Architecture and Marine Engineering of the
National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Currently he is a doctoral
researcher at the Laboratory for Maritime Transport.
In his Ph.D. studies he focuses on quantitative
methods for risk assessment and decision making that can be used in cases
where there is a threaten to human life, property and the environment. His
diploma thesis was on the same area and was entitled “Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) : Critical Review and
Future Role”,(NTUA, June 2005).
He is also
involved in various research projects of the Laboratory. He has worked on the
SAFEDOR project and the ship emissions study that was performed for the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (HCS).
Currently, he is mainly involved in a project in the context of the
strategic research and development collaboration agreement that has been signed
between Det Norske Veritas
(DNV) and NTUA and in a a three-year research program funded by the American Bureau of Shipping
(ABS) to help shipping ‘Go Green’.
He is member of the Technical Chamber of Greece
(TEE), the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), the Society of Naval
Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA)
and an alumni of the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST). He speaks
Greek (mother tongue), English, German and comprehends elements of Spanish.
