Advanced Technology to Optimize Maritime Operational Safety, Integration, and Interface
DISC II was a project under the area 6.3.3 of the Waterborne Transport research founded by the European Community(4th Framework Programme). It’s direct objective was to support, further and participate in the creation of a single European Standard for Integrated Ship Control - DISC - catering for an enhancement of maritime quality in terms of safety, reliability, efficiency and competitiveness. Building on the ‘skeleton standard’ created in the DISC project, DISC II led up to and included the:
1. demonstration of the commercial viability of the DISC Concept;
2. demonstration of the industrial benefits of the DISC Concept;
3. demonstration of the technical feasibility of the DISC Concept.
It should be stated that the work of the project constituted what would normally be included in any feasibility study, and hence served the purpose of proving the concept, rather than bringing the state of the DISC concept into a standard.
DISC II was physically and logically linked to the following: ATOMOS II (EU DG VII), MBB (EU DG VII), VTMISNET (EU DG VII), COMFORTABLE (EU DG VII) and MASSTER (EU DG VII). DISC II was further contractually linked to the ATOMOS II (EU DG VII) and PISCES (EU DG XIII).
